Where to Sell Gold in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland: What to Check Before You Do
Search "sell gold near me" and you'll get pages of results — pawn shops, mall kiosks, mail-in services, and independent buyers, all claiming to pay the most. For someone selling gold for the first time, that's not a helpful starting point. It's a wall of noise.
So instead of telling you where to go, here's what to actually check before you hand over a single item, no matter who you're selling to.
1. Are Their Prices Public, or Only "In Person"?
This is the single biggest red flag to watch for. If a buyer won't tell you their buying rate until you're sitting across from them, you have no way to compare offers or know if you're being lowballed. A transparent buyer publishes rates and updates them daily against the live market.
We post ours on our What We Pay page, updated to reflect current spot prices for gold, silver, and platinum — so you can check the number before you ever leave the house, whether you're in Vancouver, Burnaby, or anywhere else in the region.
2. Do They Test Your Items in Front of You?
Karat testing should never happen in a back room. A legitimate buyer uses XRF scanning and, where needed, acid testing, and walks you through the result as it happens. If a buyer disappears with your jewellery and comes back with a number and no explanation, that's worth questioning.
3. Do They Buy What You Actually Have?
Not every seller has plain 14K rings. A lot of Lower Mainland households — particularly across Vancouver's South Asian community — have 22K and 24K gold passed down through generations, which some general pawn shops undervalue simply because they don't specialize in it. If that's what you're selling, look specifically for a buyer experienced with 22K and 24K South Asian gold.
Others show up with a mixed box from a parent's or grandparent's estate — some jewellery, some coins, maybe a watch or a set of flatware nobody uses. That's common enough that we built a dedicated process for it; see our estate and inherited jewellery page.
4. Do They Explain the Math?
"Here's your offer" isn't the same as "here's how we calculated your offer." You should be told the weight, the tested karat, the current spot price, and how those three numbers combined to produce your total. If a buyer can't or won't walk you through that, ask why.
5. Do They Only Buy Gold — Or Can They Handle Everything You Brought?
Plenty of people show up planning to sell "some gold" and end up with a mixed pile once they start digging: a few gold watches, some pre-1968 Canadian or pre-1965 US silver coins, maybe a set of sterling silver flatware from a dining set nobody uses anymore, and even loose dental gold. A buyer that only handles gold jewellery means a second trip somewhere else. Our What We Buy page lists everything we evaluate in a single appointment.
6. Are They Actually Local — Or a Drop-Off Box?
Mail-in gold buyers are common online, and the pitch is convenience: box it up, ship it, get a cheque. The trade-off is that you lose the ability to negotiate, ask questions, or walk away once your items are in transit. An in-person, by-appointment buyer lets you see the appraisal happen and decide on the spot — no obligation, no shipping risk.
We're based in Coquitlam and see clients from across the region regularly, including Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, North Vancouver, Langley, and the Tri-Cities. Many people tell us the short drive was worth it once they saw how the appraisal actually worked.
7. Are They Accredited, and Can You Verify It?
Anyone can put "trusted" on a website. Accreditation from a third party like the Better Business Bureau is verifiable — you can look up the actual profile and complaint history rather than taking a business's word for it. It's a five-minute check that tells you a lot about who you're dealing with. More on our background and approach is on our About Us page, and common questions we get from first-time sellers are answered on our FAQ.
The Short Version
Before you sell gold anywhere in the Lower Mainland, look for: published live pricing, in-person testing you can watch, experience with your specific type of item, a clear explanation of the offer, same-day payment, and verifiable accreditation. If a buyer checks all six boxes, you're in a good position to sell with confidence — whether that's with us or someone else.
